Bluebirds are known as the symbol of love, hope and happiness – and February is the perfect month to prepare for their upcoming nesting season!We’ll discuss the history of the BIRD Program at Warner Parks, Eastern Bluebird natural history and research, how to maintain and monitor bluebird boxes, and the importance of native plants and how to attract bluebirds to your yard. Laura Cook is the BIRD Research Coordinator at Warner Park Nature Center and will be your bluebird guide. She leads a 40-year bird banding station at the park and helps coordinate the Warner Park Bluebird Nestbox Project, which was started in 1936 by nationally known ornithologist Amelia Laskey and is the oldest, continuously run bluebird nest box project in the country. Laura received her undergraduate degree in wildlife biology from Cornell University and her master’s degree studying reintroduction methods for the endangered Mariana and Hawaiian Crows from Boise State University. She lives in Franklin, TN with her husband, Terry, 16-year-old twins, Luna the rescue pup, and Cooper an indoor cat.
