Williamson County Junior Master Gardener Camp

Williamson County Jr. Master Gardener Camp is a one week long education program offering community children ages 6-12 an introduction to horticulture with an emphasis on environmental stewardship and giving back to the community. Annual camp enrollment is approximately 60 children. The day camp is held 8:45 am- 12:15 pm Monday through Friday, contributing over 900 cumulative hours of education to the campers. An estimated 1500 volunteer hours are contributed to make this program a success.

Campers rotate through four activities per day; crafts, games and activities, and two interactive sessions per day with speakers addressing the camp theme. .

Campers learned 'Where our Food Comes From' from a Davidson County Extension Agent..

They learned, 'How to Make Butter' and enjoyed a hands-on session on making bean and corn salsa, which students take home with them..

The highly popular "Bug Man" , David Cook brought his collection of creepy crawlies. The campers left with chocolate covered crickets!.

Whole Foods gave a demonstration on cooking with vegetables and making healthy smoothies..

The campers also took a field trip to nearby Stoney Creek Farm where they enjoyed a nature walk, a planting session, fed and petted goats..

In a session entitled "Fowl Play" the campers learned all about chickens..

The goal of JGC is to provide life lessons for students that will encourage them to not only gain knowledge but to contribute to their communities. By participating in JGC, each student is part of an international youth gardening program jointly sponsored by the Williamson County Master Gardeners Association and University of Tennessee Agricultural Extension. .

As a service program, JGC strives to keep the program affordable to a wide range of community youth. Scholarships are available. A $60.00 tuition is charged which covers daily snacks for students and a tee-shirt.
