We will welcome back a distinguished Master Garden friend for our Monday, March 14 association meeting. David Cook, who recently retired from the University of Tennessee / Davidson County Master Gardener program, has agreed to speak on ''beneficial insects''.
David will present information about providing habitats for beneficial insects, best nectar and pollen plants for both beneficial insects and native pollinator bees, and effective organic insecticides. His program will identify specific beneficial insects and the specific pests on which they feed, specific flowers to attract beneficial and pollinator bees, and discuss organic insecticides, their mode of action and targeted pests.
David's retirement has opened the door to private consultants for both homeowners and commercial clients concerning landscape issues involving insects, plant diseases, weeds, and environmental problems. When he was employed with the University of Tennessee as an Extension Agent for Davidson County, David provided educational programs for homeowners and commercial clients about issues concerning horticulture and agriculture. He provided educational training on pesticide safety and training for pesticide applicators seeking commercial certification and licensing and taught training classes for Master Gardener programs in Davidson and surrounding counties. David currently conducts both commercial and consumer site visits throughout Davidson and surrounding counties to diagnose and resolve issues with insects, plant diseases, and weeds.
As we look to spring planting David's program on beneficial insects / pollinator plants will be timely and filled with information we can apply to our 2022 gardens.
