Shanna T. Jones, Plant Collections Manager at Cheekwood Estate and Gardens, will be our guest speaker at the April 2021 WCMGA meeting.
She will be discussing dogwood trees and how best to care for them, as well as reading portions of her new book about Cheekwood.
Information about the book can be found here: https://cheekwood.org/cheekwood-book/
Shanna T. Jones earned her B.A in Horticulture from the University of Georgia. It is while working at the UGA Trial and Research Garden that she was introduced to the world of plant collections. Since then, she has collaborated with various plant breeders to conduct research and trials. Later, she became involved in Horticultural Marketing, helping greenhouse companies promote new plants and gardening to the public. During her time living in Seattle, WA, Shanna worked as the Garden Supervisor at Chihuly Garden and Glass.
Presently, she is the Plant Collections Manager at Cheekwood Estate and Gardens where she keeps detailed records of all trees, shrubs, and perennials. Interpretation of the gardens and plant collections is another important facet of her job and she works closely with Cheekwood’s Education Department to enhance garden-based curriculum for the garden docent and volunteer programs.
Shanna is the coauthor of two books, Color for All Seasons: A Field Guide, published in 2017 and Cheekwood, released this Spring. She lives with her husband, her dogs (a Boxer and a Parson Russell Terrier), and her 17-year-old cat. Some of her favorite things besides plants and animals are learning ceramics, food, and naps.
